The magazine most closely associated with venture capital and the tech boom of the 1990s has called it quits.
Unable to survive the drop in advertising, it joins The Industry Standard, Upside and many others in magazine heaven. At the height of the bubble, the red herrig could be a good inch thick ... now it's as thin as an issue of MacWorld (which used to be pretty thick when Apple had market share to speak of.)
I always enjoyed the Herring. Unlike BusinessWeek, it was fairly hype-free and quite objective on the upside and downside of a given technology. The Herring was also a great means to learn about learning technology in general as well as the mind of the VC. Lord knows how many copies of the herring were held up to prosepctive VCs as justification for investing this or that company's business plan. The companies I wored for did it... :)
The Herring answered a need and so I expect that it won't be long before something takes its place. It fit a niche...
